Gapped text

You are going to read an article about a village cinema. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

For almost thirty years, the cinema in the village of Ashby stood empty. Its windows were boarded up, its red seats were covered in dust, and pigeons had moved into the projection room.
Then, three years ago, a retired teacher called Ruth Kemp walked past it on her way to the post office and decided that something had to be done. “I went to that cinema every Saturday as a child,” she says. “It seemed terrible that my grandchildren would never have the same experience.”
More than eighty people turned up, far more than she had expected, and by the end of the evening a committee had been formed. The first problem was money. The building needed a new roof, new wiring and modern equipment, and the total cost was estimated at over £200,000.
Local people held cake sales, quiz nights and a sponsored walk, and a well-known actor who had grown up nearby agreed to record a video appeal. It took two years to raise enough money. During that time, much of the work was done by volunteers.
Ruth's own job, she says with a laugh, was mainly making tea. “I'm not much use with a hammer,” she admits. The cinema finally reopened last spring with a showing of a classic black-and-white comedy. Every seat was taken.
Since then, it has shown films four nights a week, and it now also hosts live music, talks and a children's film club on Saturday mornings. The cinema is still run almost entirely by volunteers, who sell tickets, serve drinks and clean the building.
For Ruth, though, the real measure of success is something else. “Last month I saw a group of teenagers queuing outside, arguing about which film to see,” she says. “That's exactly what I used to do. That's when I knew it had been worth it.”
