Dear Diary

Four people discuss the value of keeping a diary

Adaeze Nwosu, novelist

I have kept a diary since I was eleven, and for most of that time it has been a deeply unliterary document: lists, complaints, the weather. I mention this because people often assume that a writer's diary must be a kind of rehearsal for the novels, a place where sentences are polished before being put to work. Mine has never been that. If anything, it is where I go to escape from the pressure to write well. I have occasionally plundered it for details, the exact colour of a hospital corridor, say, or what someone wore at a funeral, and I am grateful for those. But the real value, I think, is that it has taught me how unreliable my memory is. Events I would have sworn happened one way are recorded, in my own hand, quite differently.
