Write for an Academic Discussion

You have 10 minutes. Your professor is teaching a class on urban planning. Write a post responding to the professor's question. Express and support your opinion and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. Write at least 100 words.

We have been discussing how cities can reduce traffic and air pollution. Some cities have made their buses and trains free for everyone and pay for them with taxes instead of ticket sales. Supporters say this gets people out of their cars. Others argue that the money could be used in better ways. What do you think? Should cities make public transportation free? Why or why not?

Ana

Yes, I think they should. When transportation is free, more people leave their cars at home, which means less traffic and cleaner air. It is also fairer, because workers with low incomes often spend a large part of their pay just getting to their jobs.

Mark

I disagree. If the buses are slow or unreliable, people will keep driving even if the ride is free. I think the money would be better spent on running more buses and trains, so that the service is actually convenient enough to compete with a car.
